1-Scrapbooking or gift wrap Paper in coordinating prints and colors creates great art pieces!
Select three inexpensive matted frames in the same color and style from any craft store. A 5”x7” or 8”x10” frame is perfect. Then select three sheets of scrapbooking paper, wall paper or gift wrap in colors that coordinate with the colors in your home and catch your eye. The patterns can be the same or mix and match patterns as long as they all incorporate the colors in your space.
Simply cut the decorative paper of your choice to size to fit the photo frame and frame as you would a photo. Hang the frames on your wall equally spaced horizontally, vertically or on a diagonal for your very own art work triology.
2-Fabric print art canvases are HOT in decorating and are easy to make!
Purchase a gallery style canvas from your local art store in any size you like. Purchase fabric or use any fabric remnants you may have from a previous project in any pattern that incorporates your room’s colors.
Be sure you have enough fabric to wrap around the canvas leaving 4 to 6 inches of extra material around the edges. Bring your canvas to the fabric shop just to be sure! Lay your fabric print side down on a clean, smooth surface. Position the gallery canvas face down in the center of the fabric. Starting with one side, fold the excess material around the canvas and secure with fabric glue, a hot glue gun or a staple gun. Repeat on each remaining side pulling the fabric snuggly as you go around.
When complete trim the excess fabric and simply hang your gallery canvas with a nail. Create a set of 2 or 3 canvases and display them together.
3-Take a trip to the zoo or park for great nature themed art!
While enjoying your day outdoors, take photos of your favorite animals, trees or flowers. Print pictures to a 5”x7” or 8”x10” size and frame with a pre-matted frame from your local craft store. Try a set of three different parrot photo or two different types of flowers. Black and white film is great for decorative photos as well. You will have a one of a kind piece of art work you created yourself plus a memorable day outdoors.
4 – Children’s handprints make great art for your home and a great gift!
Purchase a sheet of watercolor paint paper (it has a great texture to it). Purchase one or two colors of acrylic or poster paint that coordinates with your home. Paint the inside of your child’s hands evenly coated in your favorite color. Help them press down on the paper firmly to create their very own handprints!
Use scrapbooking letters or stickers to spell out their names under the handprints. Frame each set of handprints and you’ll have a colorful and personal piece of art sure to be treasured throughout the years.
5- Dinner placemats create great art!
Select a woven basket, bamboo or beaded table placemat from your local linen shop. By simply hanging them on the wall in a grouping evenly spaced either vertically or horizontally, you’ll be adding great texture and color to your space. For even more dimension, purchase a large gallery style canvas and hot glue your placemats down or across the canvas.
You can also try hot gluing the edges of each mat to overlap them and create one large piece of art. I recently purchased eight 13” round basket style placemats in three different colors from Bed Bath & Beyond for only $1.99 each! By strategically placing the placemats in two rows over my bed, I created a piece of art that is definitely a conversation piece.
